"If you can hang it on a cell phone, it exists". This seems to be the slogan when it comes to designing key chains to hang on cell phones. At least, that is, in Japan, because it’s quite common there for people to totally tune-up their cell phone. People fill their cell phones with sparkles, stickers, and, of course, charms that help personalize them and make each cell phone unique.
On the Internet there’s a web page that includes every sort of cell phone charm you can imagine. Just to give you an idea, the most "basic" charms are some beautiful brass robots, a white cat named Maneki Neko that waves its paw at you, and a wooden comb you can use to touch up wherever you are. Now, let’s go over our favorites:
We found the greatest variety in the section that includes food shaped charms. Thanks to its many colors and curious shapes, sushi is the quintessential pop food and it’s very appealing to turn it into all sorts of objects such as cushions, for instance, or, in this case, cell phone charms. These are life-sized, soft and tender, and they’re made out of chirimen cloth, the same material used to make kimonos. You can also hang charms on your cell phone shaped like the classic colored ice pops, assorted biscuits, spoonfuls of food, or life-sized donuts and pieces of toast... in case you get hungry and want a mid-morning snack.
Charms used to play games or for entertainment deserve a special mention. Infinite Toys, those absurd toys that reproduce moments of day-to-day life, also have a charm version: the banana peeler, the hermetic bag opener, the soy bean sheller, and also a pedometer. But the real novelty in this section is the Kitten Paw; you have to press its paws about 29 times to hear a very special "meow". Ridiculous? Yes, but it’s fun. See a demo here.
And, lastly, the most unusual cell phone charm of all time: a little bag full of blood. Why blood? A few days ago, Ayumi told us how the Japanese analyze their personality according to blood type and she explained that, in Japan, it’s quite common for people to ask you what your blood type if they want to get to know you better, flirt... Well, now you can carry a little bag with blood of your own type hanging on your cell phone. You won’t be able to use it to get a transfusion, but it will come in handy in case of an accident.
