Teddy bears are clearly no longer fashionable. In the last few years, we’ve witnessed how a bunch a designers have put their imaginations, creativity and skill to use creating all sorts of stuffed dolls: organs in the human body, giant reproductions of microbes, stuffed dolls representing comic book characters, soft guitars , and other plush felt dolls that reproduce food items such as sushi or succulent cuts of meat. These are a real gold mine.
Since we like plush dolls, and we also don’t think they’re something only little kids should keep on their beds, we like telling you every time we find one that surprises us. Little Thinkers are the last to join this list of unusual stuffed dolls. It’s a magnificent collection of stuffed dolls representing thinkers, philosophers, intellectuals, politicians, and the great figures of History and fiction.
One of the most successful has been the miniature plush felt Obama, a doll that faithfully reproduces the image of the US president, suit included. Can you guess when it was first launched? They day he won the election. They probably sold quite a few since anything with his face on it seems to be a hit... just look at Obamitas.
Another doll imitates Ghandi and there are no-doubt quite a few Ghandi dolls gracing people’s bedrooms already. But, beyond any doubt, the funniest doll is the one that imitates Van Gogh, with its carrot-colored hair, moody face, and removable ear. There are also dolls that imitate women such as painter Frida Khalo, whose doll looks like one of her self-portraits, and one of Giacomo Puccini’s best known character, the geisha Madame Butterfly, wearing a kimono and carrying a fan.
An original gift for more sensitive intellectual types, those who sometimes need the irreplaceable affection of a stuffed doll.
