-Pardon me, where are the restrooms?
-Down the hall to your right
It’s almost a rhetorical question, since that’s where the bathroom is in 90% of cases. And that’s precisely why the book is titled, Al Fondo a la Derecha, in other words, "Down the hall to your right". It’s actually a WC Book, a book that compiles pictures of public restrooms from around the world; not the interior, though, just the symbols, icons, and pictograms that identify bathroom doors in several different countries.
The book’s authors are Belén and Pablo, two publicists who work at an "idea hardware store" called Cuatro Tuercas ("Four Nuts"). They spent two years traveling around the world, taking the pictures that appear in the book with their cameras.
The introduction is dedicated to denominative images, that is to say, signs in different languages that indicate where the bathroom is. The rest of the book focuses on masculine and feminine icons from over 200 doors around the world. The book is easy to handle, small (10x10cm) and square, it fits perfectly on top of the WC.
This book will help you realize that what’s local can travel across borders and that there are universal languages everywhere in the world. Surely at some point you’ve stood perplexed in front of the bathroom at some restaurant thinking... "Hmm, which door is mine?" Leafing through this book, you’ll realize that there are a lot of icons that make you wonder; better analyze them all so you won’t be confused.
