Is the famous Ice Hotel the most innovative and sophisticated thing you’ve seen in the world of hospitality? You’re a bit out of the loop. Extravagant and clever hotels are in vogue. And, if you don’t believe it, just look at our selection. These hotels are really weird:
"Mausoleum Inn" Cemetery Hotel - Jiangsu, China
The "Mausoleum Inn" is probably the most spine-chilling hotel on the planet. It’s creator originally intended to build a vacation home when she bought the land. But then she realized it was full of tombs and decided to create a "thematic hotel". The theme is death, of course. And guests can sleep in beds that look like tombs in order to experience what it feels like to die. How tempting. Clients with heart conditions or mental problems are not welcome here.
"Jumbo Hostel" Airplane Hotel – Stockholm, Sweden
Although it’s an airplane, it’s parked on solid ground: in Stockholm, to be specific. It has 25 rooms and each one measures about 6 square meters. Its creators have preserved some of the plane’s original components, such as oxygen masks and the seats from first-class. You can sleep in the suite, located in the cabin, for some 3,300 Swedish crowns a night (about 300 Euros- 380 US dollars).
"Capsule Inn Akihabara" Hotel with Room-Modules - Tokyo, Japan
This hotel is in Akihabara, Tokyo’s technology neighborhood. It’s a good option for travelers on a budget because it offers a fixed rate of 4,000 yen a night (about 32 Euros /40 US dollars). The only catch is that you have to sleep in a bed-capsule: the mattress is stuck inside the wall, it has a door and a control panel full of buttons. It’s like sleeping in a microwave oven! So-called capsule-hotels are very popular in Japan and businessmen often use them.
"Madonna Inn" Kistch Hotel- California
The Madonna Inn is located in San Luis Obispo and it’s a hotel that’s... indescribable. From the outside, it looks like the sort of house you might find in a fairytale, but the inside is so striking it’s hard to explain: a fusion of thousands of different styles, explosive colors and impossible furniture combinations. Extravagant, picturesque and very, very kitsch. It’s a must-see stop if you’re ever in California.
"Capsule Hotel" Portable Hotel– Currently at The Hague
It’s more a portable room shaped like an orange UFO than a proper hotel. Upon renting it, the client can take it wherever he/she likes. You can track its itinerary using Google Maps on its website. To date, it’s traveled on the highway and has been on the beaches of France and on the canals in Laakhaven. It is currently at The Hague. This spring, they will inaugurate 4 new capsules and one giant capsule. Sleeping in one will cost you between 50 and 150 Euros a night (about 63-188 US dollars).
