Mike Rivamonte has created these friendly robots made from all sorts of old pieces of junk, vintage parts and mechanical artifacts. At first glance, it may even seem easy to create this sort of figure, but the creative process is actually a lot more complex than it looks, and does not simply consist of putting pieces together, but also requires a special sensitivity that not everyone has.
Mike not only has the ability to give inanimate objects personality, he’s also particularly skillful when it comes to making things. His passion for androids and fondness for antique pieces date back to his early childhood.
His mother would often take him to antique stores, curio shops, and flea markets... and he considered these fieldtrips his "field work". He would fantasize about the scientific gadgets and mechanical artifacts he saw at these shops and he gradually began to develop a special interest in inventions and history.
His father was an expert "at building things". He had made a color TV, radios, computers... and he showed his son how to build. Mike later built on these skills and taught himself to build robots through trial and error. His two uncles also influenced his work: one was a science teacher and the other was a carpenter, two professions that Mike seems to have combined perfectly in creating his robots.
Mike turns interesting inanimate objects such as staplers, thermometers, gas meters, speedometers, and tools... into the different parts of his robot’s bodies. The resulting figures are so expressive it almost seems they want to tell you something with their barometer mouths and light-bulb heads. Each of his robots is different, and each of them is personalized. He says they’re really nothing more than the materialization of the vision he had of robots as a child, this is how he imagined them.
Let’s hope that, when the day comes that there are as many robots as humans on Earth, they’ll be as innocent looking as these.
