Maurizio Savini creates sculptures made of chewing gum, a versatile material that allows him to produce incredible works of art.
Bubble gum executive
If you had saved every piece of gum you’ve chewed since you were little, maybe you’d have triumphed like Italian artist Maurizio Savini. For the past 10 years, Savini has been using this material to create sculptures and pieces.
They’re all pink, probably to make it very clear that he’s made them out of bubble gum, although his works would be a little more colorful had he used different flavors of gum.
Why chewing gum?
Savini doesn’t use gum to create extravagant works. He uses it for its properties. "Chewing gum is a versatile material" it can be molded like clay and, once it dries, it becomes a sturdy block that manages to keep the soft, uniform, and attractive appearance of pink bubble gum.
He shapes it while it’s warm, and manipulates it with a knife. Finally, he fixed the pieces using formaldehyde and antibiotic. The resulting sculptures have been exhibited in important galleries throughout the world, such as the Testori UK Gallery in London, where two pieces sold for 40,000 pounds.
By the way, have you ever wondered how chewing gum is made? You can see how in this video, but we should warn you that it might turn you off chewing gum for good:
If you’ve read this far, you’re probably asking yourself, does he make his sculptures with gum that’s been chewed? We don’t know; all the artist says is that it’s “moist”. We’ll leave it to your imagination.
