In 1974, Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernö Rubik invented a cubed-shaped mechanical puzzle with different colored sides: the mythical Rubik’s Cube. A year later he got a patent on it and, ever since, this magical cube has kept growing and spreading throughout the world.
Who’s never gotten their hands on one? We’ve all tried to solve it, almost invariably without success and trying to cheat by peeling off the square stickers in order to falsely get one monochromatic side. If you’re one of these people, just forget about the game and get a Rubik Cube to decorate your house, it’s square shape and colors have made it the perfect pop item. An endless number of products have been invented imitating its design. So many, in fact, that if some fanatic were to attempt to do so, he could live an entire day surrounded by Rubik’s Cubes with different functions.
He could start the day by waking up to a Rubik’s Cube shaped alarm clock with purposefully mismatched sides. Do you have to solve it to turn it off? No, if that were the case no one would get out of bed. Ladies can wear one and show it off at all hours because the Rubik’s Cube also has a handbag version. If you have an addictive personality and need to carry it around all the time, get your hands on a cell phone or keychain charm. It’s a mini or pocket-sized Rubik’s Cube, the simplified version with only four squares per side. They’re much easier and less frustrating to solve.
The Rubik’s Cube is 28 years old and it’s still a top-selling item, and we’re not talking here about the cube as a decorative object, but as a toy or game. Perhaps the secret to its success is that it’s so simple, just a cube with movable sides that you have to turn to get a different solid color each of the 6 sides. There are all sorts of tricks and algorithms you can use to solve it. There are even contests held every year where participants show off their dexterity and rapidity at solving the cube. It’s Rubik Mania.
