What would an orchestra sound like inside a giant bag of helium?
A 24-hour television fund-raising program presents this interesting experiment
The Japanese love to take part in extravagant experiments that are really over-the-top. On this particular occasion the experiment involved a giant plastic bag full of helium. We all know that when you inhale this gas your voice comes out with a very high pitch. But, what would happen if an orchestra played inside this bag? What would it sound like?
This experiment was done on a TV program called “24 jikan terevi” (24-Hour Television), which is broadcast once a year for 24 uninterrupted hours dedicated to fund-raising for charity. The program was born in 1978 with a campaign to raise donations through different collection points that were open during the program’s broadcast and located throughout Japan. Since then, the program has become a well-reputed annual event.
Under the slogan, “Love Saves the Earth”, it presents activities and reports on different charitable causes. However, lately the program has tended to take on more of a variety show air. In an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, the program has added more entertainment content, such as the “Owarai-tarento” (Japanese comedians). In order to impress the audience with his efforts, one comedian ran 100 km without stopping to sleep during the program. And, interesting experiments, like the one shown on this video, have also been carried out.
