Design knows no limits. Architects crossover to the world of fashion and now design shoes and clothing, while dressmakers try their hand at interior design… After all, what matters is the final result: getting to create a product with the cutting-edge design that is truly groundbreaking. The idea is to invent something no one has ever thought of before, to be first.
And, if on top of all that, you also come up with a product that’s comfortable, practical and durable, you night as well get ready to pick up an award. But, where do you get inspiration when you sit down to draw on a blank sheet of paper?
Pop Culture Tribute
Poufman is a collection of footstools inspired by the most famous video game of all times: el Pac-Man. A line of footstools created by Italian design firm Qayot. The collection is made up of several mobile modules that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. If you look at them from above, you can see a classic Pac-Man that looks like he’s about to eat a square footstool. They’re made of wood covered in washable plastic.
Inspired by Technology
The Pixel Couch or Pixilated Armchair is the work of London-based Spanish textile designer, Cristian Zuzunaga, an admirer off all-things checked who had already dared work with check-prints for a collection of men’s clothing. His latest design is this straight-lined minimalist couch with a very “techie” pixilated print that looks like an amplified digital image.
Nature as a Source of Ideas
Some time ago, the French firm Smarin was bold enough to come up with these stone footstool that could well come out of Fred and Wilma Flintstone’s home. The collection is called Livinsgtone and is composed of various elements: footstools, cushions, armchairs and couches all made of natural fabrics such as fleece or virgin wool
And the Spanish firm Nani Marquina seduced the more discerning public with this soft footstool shaped like a tomato, hence its name Tomato Footstool. Could the designer be growing vegetables in his back yard? Or does he just love salads? The Tomato Footstool is shaped like an enormous anti-stress ball and looks incredibly comfortable.
