Just outside the Akhibara subway station, in Tokyo’s electronics district, it’s fairly common to find a group of Japanese women disguised as servants handing out flyers with huge smiles on their faces. Their aim is to lure customers to follow them to their places of work, the Maid Cafés, thematic coffee shops where these women play the role of servants and customers are treated like the lords of a 19th Century home. The usual greeting in these cafés is “Welcome, Sir”.
Cosplay
In order to understand this type of eatery, you must first understand the significance of Cosplay, (from the English costume+ play) a popular pastime in Japan that consist of dressing up as manga, anime, comic strip, book, movie or video game characters just for fun. Cosplay Restaurants, in which servers dress up as characters from Japanese culture, arose out of this pastime. And Maid Cafés are a actually a type of Cosplay Restaurant.
What services do Maid Cafés offer?
Contrary to what one might expect, Maid Cafés are not brothels. The only thing customers are offered is excellent service, similar to the Geisha girls of olden times. The waitresses dress up in headdresses, aprons and gloves in order to stand out from other coffee shops, they are mere entertainers who interpret a role while they serve drinks, pies and cookies. One example of the service that guests receive is the way they serve tea and coffee: the waitresses kneel on the floor to mix the sugar and milk.
There are few pictures of these cafés since taking photographs is forbidden, although you may do so if you pay for that right. Other VIP services include videogame and movie rooms; and hand, shoulder and leg massages, although customers must remain fully dressed in order to receive them.

Maid Mania |

I loved this review. It was very comprehensive and helpful. I find that most people have misconceptions of maid cafes. Whenever I explain what they are it never comes out this well. From now on I'll just point people to this article. <3 |
