The Ecological Street Lamp That Wrings Out Used Batteries

We live surrounded by battery-powered devices. When these batteries run out, we dispose of them- albeit in special containers if we are ecologically minded- without so much as suspecting that there is still some life left in them and that they can still be useful. Designers Sungwoo Park and Sunhee Kim have found a way to make the most of these highly pollutant batteries: Why not use that residual energy to power street lamps?

All we’d have to do is equip our streets with what they call Energy Seed, in other words, lampposts with bases full of small holes in which citizens may deposit their nearly-dead batteries. These lights use LED bulbs, so they require very little energy to work. When enough batteries have been deposited, the street lamp lights up. Of course, once the batteries are completely spent, we still need to find a place to dispose of them, although now they’ll have fewer contaminants than ever before.

You’ve probably already noticed that the savings here are two-fold: on the one hand, the battery’s full capacity is used and, on the other hand, this could save electricity. Plus, it could also be a good way to make much-needed recycling easier for those who are reluctant to cooperate.

And, should these arguments not suffice, we may also note their impeccable design, soft colors and elegant appearance. Does anyone give more for less?
