Lava lamps became a decorative icon during the 60’s. The changing color effects and wax fluctuations inside were often compared to the psychedelic hallucinations produced by certain drugs such as LSD. Lava lamps are still a hit today, and that’s why there are still companies that experiment with their design and explore the potential this curious "technology" has to offer. One of the latest creations is the "Fireflow R1" lava lamp by Mathmos, the most prestigious lava lamp manufacturer.
It’s a silver colored pink lava lamp that’s shaped like a rocket ship. In fact, its rocket ship design was inspired by the 40th anniversary of the moon landing. It doesn’t need to be plugged in and, instead of using a light bulb; the Fireflow R1 works using a simple tea light that sits on the bottom of the lamp.
The candle warms up the glass bottle that contains water and translucent pink wax (lava) inside. That is how the characteristic effect of flowing volcanic lava is created. The lava lamp can be used for up to 3 hours at a time, the average burn time for one tea light.
