There are a lot of earthquakes in Japan and, every so often, they provoke a disaster. People in Japan practice evacuation drills every year in order to prepare for possible future earthquakes and every single home has to have an emergency kit ready just in case. Helmets are an essential component in these kits.

However, some homes do not include them in their earthquake kits because of problems with storage: helmets take up a lot of space. But that’s no longer an excuse! Tatamet is a foldable helmet that you can keeps anywhere. With this helmet, your emergency kit will be complete! You can assemble it in just one easy move.

A Tatamet foldable helmet takes up less than a quarter of the space a normal helmet does. Just to give you an idea, you can fit over 400 units in just one square meter, so it’s perfect for public spaces or shelters. At home, you can store them in any closet. You can also carry one in your handbag, since it’s dangerous to be out on the streets after an earthquake because the buildings are damaged and could collapse at a moment’s notice.

"We’ve tried to create a tool that will live up to its potential in case of emergency, and also when it comes to storage and shipping. Don’t worry about the safety: Tatamet offers excellent durability and has been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Social Security as a safe helmet", so say the helmet’s designers at the Yellow company. It’s so safe you can also use it at construction and engineering work sites.

Tatamet also pays close attention to detail; it doesn’t just protect the head, it’s also meant to protect the neck, because when there’s an earthquake you might be caught under the rubble and you could harm your neck if something falls on you. It’s comfortable, it won’t impede your vision and you can hear perfectly while wearing it. Plus, it’s easily adjusts any size head and it’s reflective so others can easily locate you. The helmet includes some easy-to-read stickers with instructions that tell you how to put it together quickly.

Here you can see a video of Tatamet that tells you how its helmets are put together.
