Pichi pichi Ebi-san, A Shrimp Shaped Cell Phone Strap
It looks like a shrimp fresh out of the sea, but it’s actually a very realistic-looking cell phone strap. It comes in two models: cooked and live. |

Fried shrimp are a favorite dish for many Japanese kids. I remember when I was a young girl, before I really knew anything about shrimp, I thought the tail was the head (see, in Japan, we remove the heads from shrimp before frying them).
Shrimp are a very common food in Japan, and, not surprisingly, a Japanese company has designed a cell phone strap that’s shaped like this little critter and is very realistic-looking. If you pull on the strap and set the little shrimp figure free, he’ll start jumping about. It’s a pretty absurd product but, when you see it, you can’t help smiling. "Pichi pichi" is an onomatopoeia that describes jumping about energetically, and "ebi" is Japanese for shrimp.
The product is by Koyoi-kyodai, a Wiz brand. This brand’s concept is to develop useless products with a touch of humor. Before the shrimp strap, they’d already launched a similar product, a clam that spurts out water when you push its shell.
There are two versions of the shrimp cell phone strap: one is grey, like a live shrimp, and the other is red, like a cooked shrimp. The red one also shakes as if it were alive (although it’s supposed to be dead). It’ll be out on the market November 28, 2009.
By the way, this shrimp’s movement is so realistic that it reminds me of a traumatic experience I had not long ago: I bought some fresh shrimp and, when I went to cook them, the shrimp started jumping about in the pan! From then on, I decided not to buy any more live shrimp...
