Do you find it amusing to see how birds imitate and repeat everything you tell them? Well, Manekko ("imitator" in Japanese) P-Chan by Takara Tomy is a bird that’ll repeat your exact words seconds after you utter them. It’s designed to look like an Australian Parakeet and will be launched on the market next spring.
This bird has two different modes. One is "imitation" and the other is "mumble". In Imitation mod, Manekko just copies everything you say and repeats it twice word-for-word in its own high-pitched voice. It can store up to 7 phrases. In the other mode, Manekko will mumble random phrases it’s learned from you and also some phrases that come pre-programmed.
After pushing the start button, if you leave him for a while, he’ll start mumbling to himself. Sometimes he’ll surprise you by letting out some phrases he’s memorized long before.
There are 3 types of bird and each one represents a different character. Each model also has a different set of pre-program words: Morippi is comic, Sorappi is romantic, and Ohanappi seems to think he’s quite popular.
The first part of Takara Tomy’s promotional video features a boy with a P-chan imitating him. In the second part, a girl tells her father that she wants to marry him when she grows up and P-chan records that word. Time goes by and, after a while (the girl has become a woman) she shows up with her boyfriend to ask for permission to marry. The father goes into the next room to find P-chan. He replays the recording where the girl told him she wanted to marry her dad. The father comes back and shows them the P-chan saying, "I hope you take good care of my daughter...”
