Japanese Doggy Bags

These are not just a practical container for taking leftover food home from a restaurant; they also make consumers ponder the problem of world hunger.

Although this habit is not quite as popular in Europe, taking restaurant leftovers home is a common practice in the US. And, honestly, if you’re paying for something, why leave it on the plate and let it go in the trash? Some people may think it’s better to order only what you’re actually planning to eat, while others claim there’s nothing like opening the fridge and finding a ready-made meal.

Whatever your view, taking leftovers home has also started to become a habit Japan, only there it has a different twist: while in the US restaurants stock up on so-called doggy bags, (so called because sometimes these food scraps are actually for the dog), in Japan, customers have to bring their own bags. And since it’s just plain ridiculous to carry a plastic piece of Tupperware in your handbag, in Japan you can now buy your own washable, reusable and foldable doggy bags to carry around everywhere you go. The ones in the photo have a fun, dual-tone design featuring drawings of dogs, and you can use them to take away all that sushi you couldn’t finish because you were already way too full.

But these little boxes also encourage people to ponder the world food crisis. Why do thousands of people starve to death while others have so much food leftover that they need to use these containers? The box has some information about poverty and hunger printed on it. For instance, a six indicates that every 6 seconds a child dies due to malnutrition, 20-30% represents the percentage of food scraps in Japan’s garbage, and 850,000 is the number of people who suffer because they don’t have enough food.

A good way to prevent your eyes from becoming bigger than your stomach is to take the doggy bag out only when strictly necessary.
