Its name is Danbo or Cardbo, (from the Japanese word "danboru", which means "cardboard") and it’s one of the lead characters in the manga series Yostuba, a cartoon that narrates the life of a 5-year-old girl with green hair who is full of energy and very curious.
Cardbo isn’t really a character, it’s actually a cardboard disguise that one of Yostuba’s schoolmates wears, although Yostuba thinks that it’s a real robot! You might say Cardbo is a first-generation robot: it’s made of cardboard and has movable limbs and an innocent-looking triangular smile drawn on its face. Simple and ingenious, Cardbo has won over fans of the Yostuba series and has also conquered the hearts of many people who are fans of robots "in general" and want to have a miniature replica.
The Cardbo doll is for sale, it measures 13cm and hides a character from the Yotsuba manga comic under its head. It’s been such a hit that the Amazon web site even started to manufacture a version of Cardbo using its own shipping boxes... and these also sold (and are still being sold) as well as the original robot.
Others, such as teenage photographer Arielle Nadel have found Danbo to be the perfect protagonist for a series of photos in which it is the only protagonist. Isn’t it an adorable robot?
