Right now, Japanese children are on vacation from school, but they have tons of homework. The smarter kids finish their homework as soon as possible so they can enjoy the rest of their days off before going back to school, but kids who postpone doing their homework until the last minute will have a hard time...

One typical homework assignment during summer vacation is to do research on a topic of your choice. Children have to choose a topic they’re interested in and show what they’ve learned in their research. It’s a very creative and fun task, but since the topic is freely chosen, a lot of kids don’t know what to do or what topic to choose, and sometimes even their parents have a hard time helping them.

This kit consists of building a DIY speaker and it’s perfect for this sort of homework assignment. Children can learn about the structure and mechanism of speakers. The kit contains all the necessary components to build a simple speaker, like as a paper cup, a magnet, etc. The speaker box is also made out of paper, so kids can draw on it with a marker or paint it in order to create a one-of-a-kind piece. They can also be more original and decorate it by adding some legs, making it look like an animal.

The excitement of building a DIY speaker and the surprise of hearing sound come out of something they’ve created themselves will stimulate kids’ curiosity and their interest in science. They can also compare the volume by changing the number of magnets and the amount of enameled wiring used in the speaker.

Unfortunately, as you might imagine, the sound quality isn’t all that great. But the point here is to learn how a speaker works and, especially, to have fun with science!

The kit is called Speaker Ko-saku Kit in Japanese, it’s made by a company called Nakabayashi and it was launched on the Japanese market at the end of July 2009
