Borat’s Mankini: A Gift for Men who Lack All Sense of Shame

Despite being one of the most ridiculous, tackiest and most eccentric bathing suits of all times, the Mankini has become a wardrobe basic for any man who is utterly devoid of hang-ups.

It was made popular by Sacha Baron Cohen on the beach in Cannes during the premier of his film Borat. Without the least sign of embarrassment or shame, the actor strolled by the shore introducing himself to people and having his picture taken with women. It was then that the history of this peculiar garment called the Mankini began. At first it was sold in every possible color and print, although the original model was florescent green. You can buy it at Curiosite.

In time British tabloid The Sun organized a contest that consisted of dressing up as Borat wearing the Mankini. The bathing suits were handed out free of charge and participants were summoned to appear at a beach to have their pictures taken. The call for entries was a success, as you can see in these photos. The prize for wearing a Mankini and making a fool of yourself for a while was an all-expenses paid trip to LA, including a stay at a luxury hotel.

The Mankini is also popular on Youtube and you can find videos of real macho men dressed up in this absurd bathing suit that’s basically a thong with suspenders and exposing themselves in public.

And what’s even more serious: the word Mankini now appears in the prestigious Collins English dictionary. What is it about the Mankini that’s made it so successful?
